Standard photo print sizes
The usual photo print sizes run from 4×6 to 24×36 inches. They fall into a handful of shapes (aspect ratios), and that matters more than the size: a file made for one shape has to be cropped to fit another. The chart gives each size with its ratio, centimetres and the pixels you need for a sharp print.

| 20×30 in | 2:3 | 50.8×76.2 cm | 6,000×9,000 | Large posters |
| 24×36 in | 2:3 | 61×91.4 cm | 7,200×10,800 | The standard large poster |
Pixels are for portrait orientation; swap them for landscape. 300 pixels per inch is the figure print labs ask for when you want a print to look sharp up close. Posters seen from across a room are usually fine with less.
Sizes that share a shape
Many sizes are the same shape scaled up, so one file prints all of them without cropping:

- 3:4: 6×8, 9×12, 12×16, 18×24. 3:4 aspect ratio guide
- 4:5: 4×5, 8×10, 16×20. 4:5 aspect ratio guide
- Their own shape: 5×7, 8.5×11 and 11×14 don't match any of the groups above, so each needs its own crop. 8×10 vs 8.5×11 explained
Why a phone photo gets cropped at 4×6
Most phone cameras shoot 4:3 photos (3:4 when held upright), while a 4×6 print is 2:3. The print is longer and thinner than the photo, so the lab trims the ends. An 8×10 is squarer than the photo and trims the other way. If the edges matter, crop the photo yourself before ordering; the tool above shows exactly what each size keeps.
Selling printable art in standard sizes
Printable shops usually don't make a file for every size. They make one file per ratio at the largest size (a 24×36 file covers every 2:3 print) and let the buyer's printer scale it down. Etsy allows five files per digital listing, which fits 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11×14 and an ISO A-size file.
FAQ
What is the most common photo print size?
4×6 inches. It is the standard snapshot size and the default at most photo labs and print kiosks. For framed prints on a wall, 8×10 is the most common small size.
What size is 4x6 in cm?
10.2 × 15.2 cm. In Europe the nearest standard print is 10 × 15 cm, which is the same 2:3 shape.
How many pixels do I need for an 8x10 print?
2,400 × 3,000 pixels for 300 DPI. Labs will print from fewer, but below roughly 150 DPI (1,200 × 1,500) the print can look soft up close.
Is 5x7 the same ratio as 4x6?
No. 4×6 is 2:3 (0.667) and 5×7 is 5:7 (0.714), so a 4×6 photo printed at 5×7 loses a strip off its long side.
